I do have a problem with multi-tasking as well but I've found that I don't need to do both at the same time. The art fairs only take a weekend of my time plus the time it takes to fill in a form and pay a visit to my framer. I would recommend getting the work together before looking at the fairs and other marketing ideas.

Biggest dilemma... being both left and right brained at the same time, and/or the time management required to handle both. For me personally, being the creator or a body of work would consume so much time that the art fair idea would just simply fall through the cracks, or rarely be able to happen, at best. Is it just me?

Thanks for the feedback Graeme. It would be good to hear your better suggestions for getting in to galleries as it sounds like you must have some very useful ideas. Regarding your last point, I think this could be a little inaccurate as whilst Art Fairs have been of significant importance to my artistic career (they directly led me to my first gallery, owned and run by the former manager and curator of Flowers East!?), they have been of sole importance to others I know. You may not rate the artwork they display or their business methods but it is unfair to discount them as a means to gain exposure as they do offer a viable means for fledgling artists to show their artwork to a huge number of people with money to spend.

The last point is the most relevant one. There is actually scientific research that supports this point of view. Point 4 re presentation must support the higher prices. Having a website is not so important until you are successful. There are better ways to get into galleries than those suggested. Art Fairs are not important.

thank you for taking the time to write this blog...there are too few serious and helpful blogs out there...i got your name off the d'art forum and so many there seem jaded and dismissive of anyone who has been successful that it is obvious they will be eternally broke and disillusioned. i am just re-entering the fine art market, more seriously than i have in the past, having spent the past several years in the commercial world of murals and motorcycle graphics. soon i will be redesigning my website to be more focused on my new series of paintings that are currently in progress, so that my online representation isn't quite so all over the place...i take your advice to heart and appreciate that you have chosen to share what you are learning...it's a challenging market and yet, the only place i want to be. thanx, Barry Howard
